New floor - What to do about radiators?

Another flooring question. We’re laying new hardwood floors and trying to decide what to do about the radiators. Our flooring guy said we had two options–first, get a plumber in to disconnect them, lay the floor down, and then put them back, possibly with a little extra height, or second, to try to lay the floor around the radiators as carefully as possible, then get covers for them to hide any imperfections. Any thoughts on this scenario? Obviously moving the radiators is the more perfectionist option, but what is that going to cost and how hard is it? We ultimately probably want radiator covers anyway, though, so does it really matter? If we go with moving the radiators, any suggestions of good plumbers in Brooklyn to do it? Thanks!

Thanks everyone. We decided just to get a plumber to do it, so that the floors are done as carefully as possible. I appreciate all the feedback.

If you’re adding covers it would seem that the easiest way to install is best and spend the money saved on the radiator cover? I’ve done some simple and not so simple radiator covers if you’re looking for someone to do that piece of work. These are the not so simple ones – http://www.nyc-hs.com/home/RD1 , I can get you something on the simple end if you wish. I’m in the directory if you care to reach out. Hope this helps! Hi BruceF, what is the best way to get in touch with you regarding a potential project?

We take radiators off, and make as tight a hole in the affected strip of flooring, slide strip into place, and reconnect radiators. Steam is easier, as valve unscrews, hot water it depends on copper, brass? etc type of plumbing. Steam system is empty in summer, but hydronic system needs to be drained and refilled, not rocket science. This is a poor fit for most plumbers, in that they rarely do this type of trim work.
