Looking for options for wider plank light colored floors

Hi brownstoners, We are looking for options for wider plank light colored floors. I originally liked the bleached, or I think it was called “pickled” finish but I’m concerned that our contractor won’t get this right. Any thoughts on options? It is a rental apartment now but we may use in a few years… Our budget is pretty tight. Thanks! Cat

Bleaching is done using a two part wood bleach to lighten the wood. Pickling is a white translucent stain applied to the wood. Both options are fairly simple to do, just need to be careful with the wood bleach. Paints by George on McDonald Ave. in Brooklyn, or Janovic should carry both, maybe even Home Depot/Lowes. Buy both and sample on some scrap flooring to see the results. You should be able to do either on a low budget. As long as he follows the directions your contractor would have to be fairly stupid to screw either one up.

we took out carpeting in the parlor floor of our apartment and found only subfloor beneath… so, while we’re saving up for our reno, we painted the floors with a white floor paint that I tinted to be slighty “off” white. I have to say, three years later, it looks great.   I never would have gone painted wood before but it’s totally cheap and I love the look. We will still install a real floor one day since subfloor allows for too much sound transfer between floors, but as we plan (ok dream) about reno one thing I’ll definitely consider is painted floors to save $$. I wouldn’t do it to anything nice, but if you have floors that are not fine wood, it’s a great treatment.   Works especially well in our parlor floor as the space is nice and bright. You’d think it the light color would show all kinds of dirt, but it really doesn’t, it has an antique-y look that I really dig, and touching up is easy to do–if you care to–as I said, part of my affection for it is its shabby chic look.

I wouldn’t leave floor refinishing up to a GC, even though most are experienced to do so, especially when you are looking for different non-standard finish options.   Talk to Jose…917-355-7977
