Light, wide plank floors

I posted about this earlier but am hoping for some more feedback. We are looking for wider plank, whitish/greyish floors–any suggestions of cost efficient ways to implement this look? Any experience with rubber/plastic floors (no cringing please..) Thanks! Cat

A properly painted wood floor can yield a beautiful result and give you the whitish / greyish tone you are looking for. Also try using milk paint for a more authentic “old” matte feel that the Shakers achieved on their furniture / flooring.  Good luck!

When you say want cost effective wide planks you gotta think about Southern Pine (aka $2 sqft).  I have no experience with bleaching but there are products like hoodbleach-190 that might do the trick.  Follow up with a white stain.  Might yellow over time though.

The wider the plank, the more it’s going to cost. You could try reclaimed wood. Moon River Chattel has a variety of reclaimed woods for $11 a square foot (I might have the type of unit wrong — it’s an unusual measure — cubic foot?). I don’t know how the light look is achieved — pickling, painting, mopping with water? I did once live in a house in which one room had floors made of that inexpensive “wood” that’s made from paper and particle board. It was only a few months old, and it was already starting to fall apart. I don’t think it was a terrible idea for one small back room (almost a closet), but I think it would be foolish to use anything but real wood throughout most of the house. The fake stuff is penny wise and pound foolish in the extreme.
