Impact noise floor treatment

What have you done to reduce the step noise from above?
I heard about green Glue and insulating between joists. I can´t believe that will do a lot because green glue is too thin, amd with joist insulation the impact noise will still travel through the beam. What worked for you?

Hey, thank you so much for these tips. I can decouple from top as I am doing all new floors and framing.
But I haven´t found a suitable material – dense Fiber Board like Homasote sounds good.
I know the thread is already old … but how much are resilient clips? and is it a lot more work for the contractor?

its fine to dampen the space between the joists with a variety of damping materials, but the most effective way is to decouple the ceiling.  most of acoustical transmission is through the structural elements, which deliver sound, vibration, footfall etc very efficiently.  you would lose a few inches of height by using resilitent clips and quietrock.  since you are in a situation where you can’t put a damping layer between the floor above you and the joist to prevent vibrations from entering the joist, you can still decouple the ceiling below from the vibration-filled structure.  the principle behind it is that the resilient isolation clips are floated in a rubber type material, and when the quietrock is attached to the clip, the vibration has already been attenuated by the rubber.

This was my recipe and it worked incredibly well, but was a lot of work.
1.  attached homosote directly to underside of subfloor, between joists. 
2\. Fibreglass insulation between joists
3\. continuous layer of homosote attached to underside of joists
4\. ran furring strips perpendicular to the joists and attached under the homosote
5.  ran all electric wiring and placed lights directly on homosote – no cutting into joist cavities.
6\. ran resilient channel onto furring strips and then drywalled 5/8 inch onto resilient channel
7\. caulked perimeter with soundproofing caulk Result has been almost a complete elilmination of noise transmission between floors and almost no vibration noise or footstep noise.
