Floor staining advice

We had new oak floors put in and stained in March. I chose a mix of Minwax gray and white in equal parts. The flooring guys seemed surprised at my choice saying they had never had anyone choose that color before. Pretty shortly after we moved in, the floor started getting scratched up. At first we thought that was normal but as it got worse we realized it couldn’t be. We called the flooring company and they came to take a look. They said it was because they used water-based poly since oil wouldn’t work with the color I chose. They said they will restain the floor but that this will keep happening. The scratches are really bad, some of the areas with the worst scratching aren’t even high-traffic areas. We’re also shoe-free house. I’m attaching pictures. Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.

We went with a water-based poly and although we don’t have scratches as noticeable as your photo, we have entire swaths of stain coming off in highly trafficked areas (e.g., in front of the fridge). We are also a shoe-free home. We recently had our tenant apt floors redone in an oil-based poly, and it does make a world of difference. We didn’t realize at the onset that the color we chose could only be achieved with a water-based poly. If we had known the difference in water and oil based poly, we would have gone with oil hands down. Live and learn. 2nd time around the work was done by Duffy’s Floor Service. They do the floors for Bloomies if that gives you an idea of quality. Highly recommend them.

What a shame. In my experience, water-based poly on hardwood does not scratch if it’s been properly applied. Putting down only one coat or not allowing enough time between coats to dry could cause the kind of scratching your photos show. In our current place, we have water based poly over soft pine floors. They will scratch if you drag a heavy piece of furniture over them, but the reason is the pine, not the poly. We take care not do this, and it’s not the same as the scratching your photos show.

That sucks. Hopefully, they were inexpensive. I’d suggest cutting your loses and getting a floor company who knows what they’re doing to fix the mess. The fact that he told you it was going to happen again isn’t a good sign.

it does seem like an adhesion problem. If the min wax stain was not completely and thoroughly dry before the application of the water base finish, this is a possible result. Also water base floor finishes like Bona and Trek are quite durable, maybe as good as oil. Based on what’s happening to your floor, They may have used an inferior product.

I’m not an expert, but it looks like the poly was applied incorrectly, or the poly is reacting with the wood/stain. When you see white scratch lines it means the poly has delaminated from the surface of the wood, meaning the adhesion between the wood and the poly is inferior. This can happen a couple different ways: – Something in the wood or stain that is reacting with the poly, prohibiting adhesion. – Poly not mixed correctly before applied, applied in too thick of coats, or not applied in the right time intervals. These all will sub-optimize the curing process. – Poly is low-grade, not meant for floors. You will hear some say that water-based polys are less wear-resistant (softer) than oil-based, which I have not seen to be the case. Even if this is true, the water-based should never look like your pictures with moderate/light use. In fact I have water-based poly on my floor (pine, no stain) and we have nothing close to this kind of wear even in the high use areas. The fact that they said “it’s because we had to use water-based” probably means they usually work oil-based, and potentially do not have experience with the water-based products. These are my thoughts based on the information provided, but I could be missing something.
