Floor Refinishing / Restoration Referral for Carlos Wood Floors

Note: I accidentally inserted this review in Roofing. I hope this one is now in Flooring! Long Story with a Happy Ending: We have a 4 level Brownstone with 100+ year-old square foot parquet floors. My husband found this house abandoned over 30 years ago. It was a holy mess. There were pigeons living inside the Parlour Level floor…. complete with pigeon poop all over! He hired “some guys” to make minimum repairs so he and his family could move in… hoping to do the rest “later on”. He could not afford to restore the floors, so he had them screened and polyurethaned. He threw rugs down and forgot about it. “Later on” never came. We got married a few years ago. I come from a family of carpenters, artists and craftspersons; I am very experienced in construction and have knowledge of paints and pigments/dyes. I have had such bad luck with contractors that I had to teach myself to do all the work they couldn’t or wouldn’t accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and have now made over nearly the entire building. New walls, closets, plaster repair, paint, trim, baseboards, outlets, cabinets, and … hardscaped the backyard (2000+ PAVERS!). The Parlour level floors were over halfway done when (of course) I hurt my back. I had sanded and hand-dyed about 700 sq ft of the 1000 when it happened. I had developed a technique that kept a lot of the character, but also allowed me to restore the wood. I looked on Brownstoner and found Carlos Wood Floors -along with several others. I read his bio. He sounded so very intelligent and capable. His bio was very well written with an obvious love for his craft. I rang him as well as 4 other companies. I explained it was a small job which needed very particular finishing. Parquet floors have wood (grain) running in different directions. It cannot be refurnished in the typical fashion with a drum sander, as it will gouge the perpendicular grain and literally dig up the floor… ruining it. Carlos was the only person who rang back and assured me he knew exactly what I wanted. In short… he did a magnificent job. He was courteous, intelligent, and knew his craft up down and sideways. He left the floors so nice the dye applied more evenly than the floors I sanded myself. What a freeking relief and quite honestly a delightful surprise. By the way, we used Varathane High Traffic for the finish. We did 4 micro coats (very thin) with 2 thicker top coats. We really like it. I am attaching images of a before and after example of his fine work. Honest hard-working professionals deserve praise. I hope anyone who needs their floors done will give this guy the work.
