Color matching parquet floor tiles
Does anyone have a good flooring recommendation for matching the color of old and new glue down parquet flooring. We recently had water damage and had to remove and install a portion of flooring. The color is noticeably off so we’d like to bring someone in to even off the color. Thanks in advance.

I assume the old floor is finished in urethane and has ambered (like 90% of the oak floor in the city). if this is the case and you know your old floor is oil base polyurethane, go by more poly and do this (in small practice quarts, not an entire gallon): buy a quart of golden fruitwood Behlen Solar Lux Stain or some Golden Brown Transtint from Abbott Paint on Eagle Street and add a tiny bit of one or the other to a quart of poly and color test it. now, color should not be so dark that it builds in one pass, but should take two or three to achieve. if you do this in one pass, you are going too dark. the dye may look “painted” on if you go too dark in one pass. this assumes the new floor is bare. if it is finished and needs to be darkened, you can lightly sand it (180 grit paper; just enough to white it over with dust) and dust it off and coat it. But two very important things: that has to be poly on the floor – not lacquer and I think some modern floors may be done in lacquer. A floor guy can do this if you do not think you can. if it is a small area though and you are a little handy, you should be able to do this – also, the new floor could be water base poly. that should be determined, take a rag with some alcohol on it and see if the poly starts to break down or come off on the rag – if it is, it is water base. Check with Rick Ladd, he may be able to do this if you think it is too small for a floor guy. Rick is on the ‘net and on here. Steve
