Bleaching Floors
My daughter would like to turn red oak floors grey, while preserving the grain. Very light grey, even a driftwood grey is the goal. Any ideas? Has anyone worked with a floor company they can recommend for this kind of work?

Getting the grey color you want depends on the color and figuring of the floor you start with. Lightening the grain is possibly the first step if it is too pronounced. Second, using an aniline dye is probably the best way to get the grey you desire. W.D. Lockwood on Walker Street in Tribeca is the best place to go. Bring in a piece of wood similar to the wood in question, they’ll tell you what to do. They sell wood finishing products usually to the custom furniture industry. They have color charts on actual wood and sell sample sizes of the water based dye so you can try it out. Do not rely on a floor refinishing guy to get the results on his own. you will need to do your homework. Most flooring refinishers have never worked with aniline dye. After its dyed you’ll want 2-3 coats of a non-yellowing poly.
