Any Rec's for a Floor Finish guy...aside from Carlos?!

We just got our estimate back from the famous Carlos and it’s more than double what our guy quotes us. Problem is our guy (who refinished our other floors, so we cam attest to his quality job) is our of work for a few weeks due to an injury. The thing I don’t like about Brownstoners is the monopoly of the recommendations. Every time I search for floor refinishers, Carlos comes up. So now what? He charges more than double of what the job calls for because his buddies are carolling away on here? Is that what it’s all about…jack up your prices once you get some recognition? I’m sure he does nice work, but why for double the other guys? Because those who use Brownstoners are reekingly rich. Get outta here. Any rec’s for another floor guy? Or else i’m going to wait.

I would not recommend Verrazano, they did my mom’s brownstone floors years ago and after 1.5 years the poly started peeling in multiple locations. I’ve used both **Carlos Wood Floors** and Bonete Renovation – both have done excellent jobs for me and their estimates have been competitive. I usually tell them they are bidding against each other to keep them honest. Best bet is to get 3 quotes and commence negotiating. Also you should really ask for references that you can both call and email. Additionally have them walk you through some current jobs. If they cannot produce recommendations or current refinishing jobs then don’t even consider them. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT – always ask what product they plan on using on your floors, one of the main reasons I’ve stuck with **Carlos Wood Floors** was his ease in disclosing **BONA TRAFFIC** (which is GREENGUARD certified) for his water based finishing jobs – I have two young twin boys and chemicals and noxious smells were very important on my list beyond costs. Marcus did all of our floors about a year ago – he did a great job and is also a gem of a guy. And reasonable. He was thinking of moving so not sure if he’s still around but it’s worth a try – 347 579 5980\. You can say Mark recommended him.

We used Victor Zambrano to redo our parquet floors. I don’t have his contact info on me, but he has been mentioned on this site so you may be able to find him in the archives. Good work, and I felt he was very reasonably priced. Oh, and by the way, all of us on Brownstoner are NOT “reekingly rich.” In fact, I would venture to guess that the majority of the users here are doing work on their homes with very tight budgets and use this site to get the best information possible to stay within their budgets. Anyone “reekingly rich” probably wouldn’t need to be wasting their time researching a project for cost, resources or otherwise as they would have someone to do that for them.
