Multi-Family Hallway Smoke Detectors
Res2, I can believe it. With fully functioning detectors in every unit, we’re pretty well protected. But do you have any documentation for this? I can’t speak to our insurance requirements, but we’re trying to reduce elements in our building that need maintenance.

We are an 8-unit owner-occupied coop on 4 floors. We’re trying to evaluate code requirements for our hallway, which is a single stairwell with two units per long landing. I find lots of references to the requirement for owners to install smoke detectors in all units, but no reference to common areas. My inclination is that they are not required but I thought I’d check to see if anyone had more certainty. Thanks, Tim

in most cases, your insurance company will require them. just put them in. And in the basement too, especially

Believe it or not; they are not required in the public hallway. But this is one of those items that the more you have the better.
