Hi, I have a two story house with 4 units in Queens. Two units on each floor. I would like to install window guards on a unit on second floor (with kids). 1\. My house does not have an outside fire escape. Do I have to leave a window without window guard as a secondary egress, if so, which one? 2\. Is there a difference between a window guard for non-sleeping and one for bedrooms? From the description of some window guards, it says that they are for non-sleeping areas only. I read the NYC official docs about window guards but see nothing about the separation between the two. Thank you.

Look into “Guardian Angel” window guards. They are securely screwed through the window jamb to keep children safe, but have a release for an adult to remove the center bars for egress in case of emergency. They are also made with a better quality finish then standard bars which rust. For the record, I spoke to the FDNY when researching these vs. standard bars for a client’s project. They essentially said you can’t stop them – they will get through anything you put it there to get in the building. Very comforting to hear, but that doesn’t help you if you had to get out before they could arrive. You can buy them online and install yourself as long as you are capable of properly anchoring them to the frame. Otherwise, Baby Bodyguards does a good job with this service and the husband and wife team (Fred and Courtney) are very pleasant to work with.

@nanner08: thank you for your response. I don’t see Guardian Angle on the NYC list of approved window guards. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/win/window-guard-board-list.pdf I remember reading somewhere that any window guard that can be open are not approved (must be fixed into a window).
