5 year FDNY sprinkler inspection

Mikel: I contacted Fred Smith Plumbing, who came over to do an inspection. They confirmed everything was to code and I should be fine for the test. When it came time to get a price, it went sideways. They said the cost would probably be at least $1,000 based on time and materials (another pre-test visit plus waiting for the FDNY). They were a lot higher than anyone else ($350 and $450, both of who’s work I know). The guys at Fred Smith seemed very professional, but prices seem to reflect a different clientele.

It is time for my next 5 year sprinkler inspection. Can anyone recommend a sprinkler firm to do the inspection (the one with the FDNY observing)? Some idea of cost (and anything else I should be on the lookout for) would be helpful too. I have a 3 family with sprinklers in the hallways. Thanks….

Do you hold a Certificate of Fitness to conduct monthly sprinkler inspections, or do you use a plumber or other service for these readings? If using a service, contact them to make arrangements for the flow test. Otherwise, make arrangements through your licensed plumber.

I have a certificate and do my own monthly inspetions. My plumber doesn’t do the 5 year inspections and suggested I look for a sprinkler specialist. I passed last time without any issues but thought the sprinker guy’s most recent pricing: $700 for the test (and another $700 for a pre-test to make sure everything will be pass) plus the Fire Dept fee was a bit excessive.

Dear housepoor, I’m sorry I have no expertise on sprinkler inspections, but I do have a question regarding the insulation you got back in 2011 – your comment then was that it hadn’t got cold yet. Housepoor – the price you are being quoted for the sprinkler specialist to perform a 5 year sprinkler test sounds high. We used Fred Smith Plumbing recently here in Manhattan and I think the charge was under $200\. Good luck

tedco: the insulation we blew into the roof has worked out well. The tenant says they almost never need the heat. Not sure about how it helped cooling. I wish I could give stats on how much my heating bill went down, but I can’t tell exact numbers without all sorts of adjustments for how cold is was one year to the next. Overall I think it is a very good idea and worthwhile.
