Financial advisement?

My partner and I are interested in having someone review our finances, give some basic assessments of our savings plans and investments, and give us an idea of whether it would be wise to purchase a home within the next few years (as well as what our target price range should be). Who does such a thing — would this be an investment adviser? An accountant? As you can tell I’m new to this whole business. Any recommendations for someone in the Park Slope area?

Yes, a financial adviser. Not an accountant and not a lwayer.   Certified Financial Planners can be found by walking into any Schwab office and other similar places.  They can advise in IRAs, financial goals and investments.  They can advise on what you should be putting away to meet retirement goals. They should certainly be able to tell you what you can and cannot afford but so too would a mortgage broker.

Also, most banks will have similar services.  For example, B of A will hook you up with a Merrill Lynch CFP.

I would actually second an independent firm as well over Merrill.  Merrrill people will tend yo put you in their own products.  I just don’t know any here in NYC.

Unless you have an overly complex financial situation, I would take a look at where you are at for free.  I have and MBA in Finance and have always had a strong facility with personal finance.  I just retired from my job as VP for Finance at Arizona State University and my wife and I are brownstone shopping in Brooklyn – probably on the edge of things in Bed-Stuy (we are from Brooklyn).  I have a brother who is a CFP and another who is a tax lawyer, so we all share personal finance notes frequently.   My motivation?  Hopefully I can ask you questions about the area when I have them.  It has been 20 years since we lived there.  My wife is in Brooklyn right now, in fact.  Email me at mjmason18@hotmail.com if you care to.  I am not licensed to give financial advice and don’t propose to give any.  Just my thoughts about what you should be thinking about.  I don’t see why that can’t be done over email.  If not – all the best.  Mark
