I have the usual brownstone with a back yard and an extension. The building is 20′ wide, the lot 100″, building 45′ long by 20w. I’m guessing the area to be enclosed at approx. 40 x 20’w. I need privacy from my neighbor who has tons of loud parties and a backyard of dirt. I was thinking a plastic fence which I priced out at around $5000; but I’m wondering how much for a brick wall? Does anyone know? Has anyone had this quoted for a similar size yard? I could also do brick on two sides, or even just that side until I could afford it on the other sides. Since you can’t build any fence higher than 6 feet, I’m not sure what the advantage of brick would be. Is a brick wall better at blocking sound than other materials? The price you give for plastic — I assume you mean a vinyl fence — seems high. A good solid cedar fence might cost that much, maybe less, installed. Another thing you can do (after you put in your fence) is add plantings — shrubs — which will help block some sound.

I was suggested a contractor from this site few months ago doing work in my house, and I am here to report that I had a great experience with them. CTG Construction worked in our house doing work front and back of our house. Give them a call, I am sure you will like them as I like them doing our works. A masonry wall needs a foundation, and it will not be cheap. Nor will it necessarily block the sound the way you want it to.

Yeah, echoing kidbklyn. Whatever the cost of a brick wall (with gun turrets?), living with a bunker mentality is what you can’t afford. Better off spending your money on an attitude adjustment and finding peace with your neighbor (and, need I say, generations and generations of Brooklynites survived perfectly well without even chain link fences).

I don’t understand why it is on this forum that whenever someone tries to figure out how to block out a neighbor’s loud harassing noise or jungle full of weeds or some other eye- and ear-sore right next door, they are accused of needing an “attitude adjustment” or not accepting the realities of urban life. The OP is not trying to change his/her neighbor’s behavior — probably recognizes that it would be futile — but is simply trying to find a rational way of coping with an unpleasant situation. OP has made a reasonable inquiry about a brick wall. If you have information pro or con, it seems to me that the “neighborly” thing to do would be to share that info rather than chastising the OP for a perceived “incorrect” attitude. .
