Temporary restoration for cast iron gate

I was hoping for some advice…  We are completing the first phase of our renovation in Carroll Gardens.  One area that will need to wait a few years is the restoration of our cast iron newel post and gate.  The gate itself is in reasonably good shape but there are places that are rusty and fragile.  For the time being, I was hoping to sand the rust and patch some holes with bondo or some other product.  I would then cover with paint and primer.  Do you think this is a good temporary approach?
