Thanks fishiefishie and soslope, that all is good to know. I am not up to doing this my self, but definately will take advice from both. Now to find a reliable and honest exterminator. I have pretty much determined extent of damage – not quite as bad as thought (some is superficial), but not good. thanks again.

Despite treatment, termites have continued to wreck havoc. Can someone recommend a RELIABLE exterminator (NOT TERMINEX). Just as important, damage to two or three basement girders appears severe – need an HONEST CONTRACTOR to evaluate and likely replace several heavy (loook like 3′ X 10″) wood girders in basement ceiling, supporting garden level apartment Thank You.

I can’t recommend a particular exterminator, but I can recommend that you: -Stay away from the massive national companies like Terminex -Get multiple bids and ask every possible question, especially about what they’re using to treat -Give preference to exterminator sing Termidor, which is generally considered the best product

A few things: 1) Termidor is definitely the best out there.  Unfortunately, it is not approved for use in NY, so no company is going to use it.  They will use Phantom which is good, but not quite as good as Termidor. 2) You want to spray Bora Care on all exposed wood in the basement. 3) The chemicals are expensive and all need to be diluted with water before use.  However, you want to make sure that the exterminator does not try to cheat you by overly diluting them.  For an active infestation, bora care should be diluted 1:1, for example. 4) The goal with termidor or phantom is to get a barrier in the dirt around your house.  You do this by digging a trench 6 inches deep and 6 inches wide against the foundation and then pouring the phantom or termidor mixture into this and doing it perfectly all the way around the house.  This is basically impossible in brooklyn since you cannot get to the space between houses and there is nearly always a cement patio up against the house in the front and/or back.  Therefore, you do the best you can.  Where there is a patio, you can drill every 12 inches and inject the chemical into the holes.  It won’t be perfect, but it will be pretty good. 5) Companies will try to sell you bait stations.  They are okay and can have a purpose, but they take a long time to work.  The bait stations do not attract termites.  The termites wander around underground randomly.  If they bump into a bait station, great.  Until they randomly find the station, however, the station is doing absolutely no good.  I would definitely not use bait stations alone. 6) A lot of termite guys are extremely lazy.  They won’t crawl into crawlspaces far enough, won’t spray enough chemicals, etc.  You really need to be on top of them.  There are some great resources out there to read (e.g., http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/ has tons of very good information).
