Seeking exterior siding options and installer
I need to install new siding on the back of my wood frame house. GC says EIFS is inexpensive and great insulation but I’m keen to find other options: I’m getting a bid for Hardie and would like to get bids for wood, possibly aluminum (but not the old-school aluminum). Any advice on how these compare in price and any recommendations for an installer who can give me a bid?

Nope. They do not certify them. Called them 3 weeks ago when i was inquiring about eifs certifications for a customer and was looking for an alternative. They try to keep a list of qualified people through their “alliance” program.
I just googled as much as i could about this and a whole heap of contractors come up saying they are certified. They are not. Nobody is challenging them so they keep saying it.

We decided to put Hardie in the rear and front of our wood frame (formerly covered in aluminum siding). There are not that many certified Hardie installers in Brooklyn, and the one we used was so busy they were only taking jobs including both front and rear at the time. AFAIK aluminum is about half the cost of Hardie, and one side can be done in a day. The Hardie folks were at our house for weeks — the job included lots of extras such as painting everything, exposing and repairing the cornice, fabricating a canopy, etc. We didn’t bid out wood because I have seen quite a few insects flying around trying to find a way in. Though if we had all the original wood siding and trim, I’d thank my lucky stars. If you don’t need to add an insulation layer, or want to keep the prices reasonable, I think aluminum can be a good option, particularly if you use a little thicker trim around the windows and doors, which looks nice.

if you go back to the EIFS, know that the reason most of these systems fail is due to improper installation and most problems are around windows. if you do go back to EIFS, be sure to use a contractor certified by the manufacturer. yes, they will cost more not because they are getting richer than the uncertified guys, but because they will take their time and do it right – especially around the details and that is where the problems develop.
i have a customer now who has a failed EIFS system and i have recommended she go with Hardi.
