repairs to metal handrails
that end does look cast, but since it’s only a small end-cap, as opposed to a full pillar, perhaps it won’t cost a fortune.

If possible, I want to repair the broken-off end of one of the original stoop guardrails. This is a rental and the owner does not want to spend much at the moment. This is a non-landmarked area. Anybody had any good luck with companies that do repairs instead of new only?

That railing is cast and in very rough shape. I’m sure the better ironworkers in and around Brooklyn could best tell you what your options are, but having just priced out some ironwork myself, I can tell you that it will be an expensive fix. They would need to make a template from the other side, and then repair the remainder of the railing, if it’s even salvageable. It looks like it may be rusted out. Personally, I do not think I would do this project as a renter. In my completely unprofessional opinion, it will cost thousands, not hundreds, to fix. Try http://www.forerunnercreations.com/, http://www.pironworks.com/, http://www.ironworkdesigns.com/, http://www.vinniesironworks.com/ to name a few.

I wouldn’t be paying for it, but bidding out the job and overseeing the work for the owner; I have just taken over as super. I am sure you’re right that it will be expensive, was looking for a possible short term fix that would address the safety issue for the time being.

From a safety perspective the best option looks to be to cut and cap it. The companies I listed could do this, as could many other in the trade that, unlike the ones listed, do not specialize in historic ironwork.

I’m sorry – where did you list the companies? And thanks for the input.

that does not look cast to me at all. garden variety stuff. you should be able to replace that pipe, its just that someone would have to have the capacity to bend tube (its a machine), which is not handyman stuff, but most ironworkers should have it.

Thanks, dorkofwindsor, sounds right to me.
And EJR – found the companies list. Didn’t realize your answer continued past the visible. Thank you.

On second look, perhaps you are correct that the rail is pipe. The question though is what is the terminus that is broken off? Does the pipe just end or does it attach to a cast piece? HB-ack, what does the other side look like?

[Railings2](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:cq0o:railings2.jpg.jpg) Yes, I’m guessing the decorative ends are cast, and the rail itself bent tube.
