indoor flooding - urgent repointing?

day 1 in new place, and heavy rains to test it.  have just discovered that when roof gutter is swamped, violent cascades splatter down the fire escape — and plenty of missing mortar is allowing floods into the walls – i have streams of water pouring down from the interior top of a window!!  (i have unlatched lower pane as if for cleaning and leaned it back 6″ to catch and release the indoor waterfall for now) so (a) i am now looking for reliable repointing recommendations for some emergency work asap, and (b) is there any temporary solution i can apply to problem areas – i could use the fire escape to apply expanding foam sealant, but something tells me that’s a dumb idea. -deano

BTW, the basket is something you put in yourself. It will work fine with your gutter design. It’s a good idea to prevent downspout clogs (not that you have one of those now) and you have to remove leaves from it often. It’s like 99 cents at Home Depot or whatever.

I doubt you need repointing. Just make sure your gutters are always free of leaves. We had this problem, and that fixed it.

Downspout may not be clogged, but sounds like the gutter is overflowing. You really should get up there on your roof to have a look.

Having the gutter made as part of roof surface is fairly common.  dibs’s idea of channeling is a good one.  You can try VinRoy – 646 554 4513 – but masons have been really busy w/ all the rain recently.

How about building a dam of some sort to channel all of the roof water to one side or the other temporarily???

havent yet been up, but checked down at ground and the downspout was roaring away at the peak, so i dont think it’s clogged.  more likely swamped by the kind of downpours that we’ve been getting these last few weeks.  (btw, no basket – it’s an odd design, with a channel in the roofing tar that runs across the low point of the roof then disappears down a “rabbit hole” in the roof itself, a good foot away from the rear edge, re-emerging out back below the roofline as piping into the downspout)

The only thing you might try right now is to go up on the roof and make sure the gutter is clean and the downspout is not clogged.  Usially there’s a mesh basket where the gutter connects to the downspout and that gets clogged.
