FENCE - “pretty” side facing my property or the neighbor?

I know it’s customary in general to put the pretty side of the fence towards the neighbor but if I’m going to spend $15,000 on a custom cedar fence why should I sacrifice the pretty side to the neighbor? Can’t they use the same posts and do something on their side?

It’s not required in NYC to put the pretty side facing your neighbor. You could offer to cover the other side with a new homedepot fence if they don’t want to look at your side.
