Doorbell on garden level?

The USPS refuses to deliver mail to my parlor level even though they installed a keykeeper box (and locked my keys in it) and so they knock on the garden level window which I only hear if I am standing in that room. ConEd and Keyspan knock on the window too which is why I have estimated bills. Get the doorbell installed!!!

Hi – we live in the lower duplex of a brownstone.  Our electrician has almost convinced us that a doorbell on the garden level is not necessary, since there are buzzers for all units on the parlor level.  We have an intercom on both floors of the duplex, if that matters.  Our electrician says we will be bothered by people coming under the stoop to gain entry,  The other thing we considered is that if we were to ever sell the building, the new owners might want to reconfigure it as a triplex over a garden apartment, in which case, the garden doorbell would be necessary.  Thoughts?

It’s just a doorbell. Why is your electrician so oppinionated about it? Does he not want to do the work? The quick and easy work around is to get one of those do-it yourself wireless doorbells. But it just seems to me that he is overthinking it waaaaay too much.

When I bought my house (3 story, single-family) I was determined that I’d always use the main (stoop-top) entrance. That lasted about a month–you may find the under-stoop entrance very convenient–put in the extra doorbell.

I think you shouldn’t do much with an eye to what some imaginary people might want in the future.  On the other hand if you do install one you should make sure it has another sound like perhaps a cackling witch or a parrot sound.

I would put one in- I have all floors, but my bell is on the parlor floor.  What people do, especially Con Ed, is not walk up the stairs to ring my bell, which is clearly visible, but bang on the security door downstairs, which I may or may not hear.  It’s annoying.
