Another Mitsubishi Multi City question
Four level brownstone – gut renovation planning in process. Considering Mitsubishi City Multi for both AC and Heat, with no other heating source. Rooftop solar panels to defray electricity costs. 1\. Views on not having a gas fired heating source? 2\. In NYC climate, is S series sufficient or is Y series h2i hyper heating inverter recommended?

What Steam_man says. Not saying the expertise for greener doesn’t exist, just hard to come by. Bleeding edge isn’t for the faint of heart. And not realizing you are at that edge is recipe for disaster.

I am all Electric, currently installing a Mitsubishi h2i in my 4 story, and I have no gas. A Zehnder HRV is also installed, one system for the whole house. It’s not a passive house, but it’ll be insulated very well with triple pane windows, exterior insulation +++ It’s half way done, if you have any question or you want to have a look at it – let me know: bv1515@zoho.com

Insulation and windows are money well spent. Basic upgrades like that save more money than people think they will gain by doing the “sexy” upgrades like solar and geo. That being said, if the building is not going to be air-tight (like in a Passive-House) standard or even super-insulated, I would not recommend heating with electricity.

We have projects that do not include gas-fired equipment. Two of these are air-tight projects and include Zehnder ERVs (Energy Recovery Ventilators) which circulate fresh air. The clients are putting more money into the envelope and into insulation (and windows). The Mitsubishi packages (along with the ERVs) cost less in the long run. If you are also interested in solar, then it sounds like you would be interested in envelope design. Souns like Sundial could give you some advice, and we would also be happy to speak with you and provide you with some other design/engineer contacts. masterbuildernyc@gmail.com BLUE GREEN RED LLC

I’m going to give you the same advice I give my clients. Save a whole ton of money and install Mitsubishi Mr. Slim instead of City Multi. Also, consider the cost of electricity is a lot higher than nat. gas. So heating with electricity will be more expensive in the long term, than heating with a boiler.

If your building envelope is tight, with all walls and roof properly insulated, then the Mitsubishi CityMulti system should be sufficient to handle the full heating load. We have specified the MXZ series in past projects. Kyle Page AIA LEED AP Sundial Studios Architecture & Design, PLLC
