White roof - what kind of roof do I have?

My building is hoping to paint or coat our black roof white – we want to keep the building cooler, reduce the heat island effect, etc.  The NYC.gov Cool Roofs website asks us to identify what kind of roof we have  – “The Cool Roof coating can only be applied to a flat roof covered with smooth asphalt, EDPM rubber or smooth aluminum”.  I’m unsure what kind we have – it’s about three foot wide black strips covered by what look like tiny black pebbles.  Can anyone help me identify what it is?

sounds like a ballasted, built up asphalt roofing system. Very common.
