Should I ask electrician for insurance info? Same as contractor?

So I understand if you hire a contractor to do work in your property you are supposed to get his insurance info in case things go awry. Would I follow the same procedure for an electrician? There’s one coming by my place tomorrow to take a look and give me a quote. Just need to know what I should ask him before he starts a job.

Yes, you should ask them for a certificate, and have it in hand before they start any work. As MP said license copy also. None of this should be any problem for a reputable firm. As Wholesaler said, note their appearance, in all my years I have only had to enforce a “dress code” twice, these however were both good guys, they just evidently believed in getting their money’s worth out of a pair of jeans. There was no mouthing off though, and both times the rest of the crew got a good laugh.

We provide insurance certificates naming the client and building as additionally insured in multi-family buildings all the time. As a homeowner, you’re well within your rights to ask and even ask for proof from the company. Also, ask to see a license in the owner’s name. There are a ton of companies out there doing work under other people’s licenses.

Absolutely ask them if they have insurance. Ask for references. Also, appearance and how the contractor presents themselves should be a good indication of the kind of work they do. If they’re dressed messy and all disheveled than expect that kind of work. I sent an apprentice home once because he had two rips in his jeans and they were really ratty. He gave me crap about it, so I said good, now your fired. He represented our company and first impressions of how a person looks and presents themselves goes a long way.Good luck.
