Full-service light installation--new wiring, new fixture installation, AND re-plastering?

Who should I hire to install ceiling light fixtures from scratch? The rooms currently have nothing, so I think I need everything from switches and new wiring, to installation of the fixtures, to patching whatever holes are made in walls and ceiling for all this work.

Hello, I don’t have a recommendation for an electrician, but I am completely confident that I can handle all of your plastering and painting needs. Shoot me an email or call and I’d be happy to come by and take care of the repair work.    Be prepared for a mess if the electrician needs to put a lot of holes in old plaster. I recommend buying a box of painters plastic and covering everything and making sure that the electrician is going to contain the dust if he has to make a lot of holes. Use a licensed electrician, you don’t want to mess around with a hack. Hiring a GC will just add a lot of money to the bill. I have no quarrel with general contractors for complicated jobs. Yes, I suppose you are  acting as your own contractor by calling an electrician first and a plasterer second, but that’s pretty easy. IMO contractors only really earn their money when they coordinate complex jobs involving many trades and critical schedules.   As far as recommendations, IMO it’s best to consult your neighbors or a local list serve. For example, our local PLG Yahoo list has an extensive database of tradepeople. There is probably something similar in your neighborhood.

I’d be comfortable managing the two different tradesmen myself, but have not yet received any good recommendations for either.

You don’t really need a general contractor for something so simple, unless you really think you’re not capable of hiring an electrician first and a painter/plasterer second.
