Electrical work being done properly?
We are updating all the wiring in a pre-war coop and there’s a difference of opinion between our GC and electrician on the proper way to route the cable/wiring — electrician is placing it up against the plaster, while the GC thinks it should go through the studs (deeper into the wall, I guess). Is one right? Apologies if I have the nomenclature wrong…

Thanks very much Steve for your thoughtful response. The (armored) cable is running about a foot and a half off the ground, so not in an area where one would usually start hammering, but that’d probably be no comfort to the first person who does.

I have seen true electricians do it both ways during a reno. honestly, from the standpoint of someone who does finish work and hangs things, I like the middle of the stud appraoch. this will give the cable (I hope this is armored) more give to move out of the way if someone were to drill or screw into the wall later; it is hard to puncture armored if it is free to move about; it will skirt the drill point. if it is against the plaster or buried in lath – which happens during renos – it may be firm and if a drill is put against it, it may stay there and yes, get puncutured. . Don’t think I am worrying too much here; there are stories all over the place about people hitting things in walls and the bad things that result. Also YOUR GC IS WATCHING OUT FOR YOU. Steve
