Add a electric meter for cellar and common areas
Hi, I have a 3 family house in Brooklyn . Looks like the previous owner did not pay his electric bill, so con ed must have taken away 2 meters. currently I have only one meter. I want to get back the 2 meters and add another one for common areas for a total of 4 meters. The current licensed electrician that I have hired to do this has not made any progress for the past 45 days and always tells me he is waiting for con ed to get back to him. My question is that does it take con ed that long to reply or can it be the Electrician just delaying the job due to less interest. I also need 220 volts power . currently there is only 110 volts and I need 220 volts for a electric dryer Any suggestions/ recommendations . please help

before you add the meters, i’d consider keeping as is on one meter. if you own the cellar and common areas, adding meters will create more in monthly costs — Con Ed charges a lot more for 3 bills than it does 1 (all the standard service fees apart from actual electricity consumption). they want it that way, too.

call master electrician shown above. You know, this is an example why we should listen to the old people; my grandfather was an overhead linesmen. I bet he knew a lot. Steve

you would have two hots coming out of the meter. mine are red and black and each one goes to a leg. they are not joined anyplace. they go into the meter and then into the pipe to the road as separate wires. then there is a white wire (neutral). when I look at the transformer on the pole in front of my house, I can see the two wires coming off of it and they service several of the houses here – each separate wire to make up the 220\. I am speaking a little out of my comfort zone here to tell you the truth; it is not like a pro explained this to me. It is kind of stuff I figured out (the part about the box and legs back to the meter and pole; the stuff from the main forward has been explained to me by electricians over the years). So take what I say with a grain of salt as someone should not touch any of this based on what someone like me says here. do not try putting meters to anything. even when I work around this stuff, I wear heavy rubber shoes (sometimes in a basement I put a rubber mat down), work with one hand with no wedding band on and no watch. do not put a meter to anything in there; let an electrician. the only friend electricity has is con ed. When you spoke with con ed was there a current job on file? You would need to open equipment to find out the answer to your last question, not sure of your comfort level with this. We can be reached through the directory if you would like to discuss this further.

Con ed is telling me that on file there there only 2 meters then though i see the base for 3 meters. I can probably turn on service for 2 meters but i will need to go thru a electrician for another 2 meters For 220 volts , Is there any way to tell if one or two hotwires are coming to the meter by looking at it ? I would need 220 volts with the missing meters.

There are still some old houses out there with 110 Volt service, only (1) hot wire! If there is no 220 Volt service in the building that would be considered an upgrade. Are you upgrading the service at the same time or just want to re-install the missing meters and a common area meter? Depending upon how con ed wants to proceed on their end it could take that long. Have you recieved any form of communication from con ed regarding this job?

I used Cierello too for a relatively small job. What did ConEd tell you about the atatus of the accounts that weren’t paid? This still should just be a situation of re-opening the accounts and getting ConEd to reinstall the meters on the open fixture where they fit in and were removed to shut down the electricity in the first place?

I like cerillo. I swear by them because of the care their guy took around my new wood work. and I wish I recalled his name as I would post it here. also because the customer where that work was done uses them all the time and merely leaves them a key and has never had a problem. there are other electricians as well, besides the ones arkady mentions, tom munetz. 718-416-2686\. small company, but I have sent him to several customers and they have all liked him. licensed and insured, the full deal. Thank you all for your replies. When I spoke to con ed, they did not give me a reason why the meters were missing and told me that a electrician would be needed to get the meters back. I was assuming that the previous owner did not pay. Any recommendations of electricians that do this ? Looks like the electrician I am dealing with thinks this job is too small for him and wants to do it whenever he has some gap between big jobs of his. This house is in oceanhill, Brooklyn.

really, you should have 220\. if you look in the box, there are two legs, each being a different 110/120\. when you combine these with a 220 breaker that makes use of both legs, you get 220\. I have yet to see a house in the city which has just 120, though I have seen some that are only 60 amps (which is unusual at this point) I am not an electrician, so take everything I just said with a grain of salt. steve

If meters were removed for non-payment you can easily get them put back in by opening accounts for those two missing meters with Con Ed. To separate out the hallways and cellar wiring, and add an additional meter you will need a permit. Your Electrician should not be waiting for Con Ed at this stage of the proceedings. Your Electrician is probably too busy to pull your permit or there is a breakdown in communication somewhere..
