We are Putting a deck off the parlor floor. Our dilemma… The step off the deck.  We have seen it flush to the inside parlor floor BUT we have also  been told that you should have a step down; Either 6 inches and up to 12 inches.  We are concerned how such a step down will look and function.  Does anyone have any experience or suggestion.  Sliding glass doors lead onto a rear deck  and one foot of galvanized grating. Is this step down really necessary for drainage???

If the walking surface of the deck is metal grating, I fail to see where the drainage problem is. For decks that are created on top of existing roofs with roof drains and parapets, it is prudent to raise the door sill up to prevent any ponding water from getting inside.

They might be talking about snow build up.  I suppose it is up to you if you worry about that.  One step is not a big deal.  I do a slight drop unless otherwise requested.
