Looking for recommendations for cleaning up olive oil that spilled all over our stoop (bottle dropped and broke). One person mentioned corn starch to me so right now I have the area covered in it. Below is a photo from right after it happened.

Dawn and boiling water. Or – if you can find it – this stuff http://uedata.amazon.com/Procter-Gamble-Grill-Barbeque-Cleaner/dp/B00AGZ27T6 and hot water. Or TSP and hot water. Or barring all of that, dishwashwer detergent and hot water. See the trend? Strong detergent, VERY hot water. Scrub brush.

I would try to float most of it away without any rubbing. I always get concerned that rubbing may push it in further. then you need to use a poultice. there is a stone supplier who sells such near the Home Depot Expo Center in queens. Follow their directions. I think the hot water idea mentioned above will help. maybe the soap (tide). mineral spirits will reduce oil and as will naptha. in the end you will be left with some residue and you may end up trying a poultice. carbon tetrachloride would also work. Carbon Tet may actually work without leaving any sort of residue of its own. Naptha and Min Spirits bring their own issues in that sort of way. Steve

To follow up, since i’d already covered it with corn starch for a couple hours (lots of it) I then went out with a stiff brush and started scrubbing…the corn starch would clump up and I was able to sweep it away with some of the oil. Once I swept most of it off into a dust pan I poured several buckets of hot water down the stoop. Hopefully between that and the rain that’s coming it will be mostly taken care of. If not I’ll try some of the other methods you guys mentioned.
