painting front door of brownstone
Yes, we just did our front doors using Hollandlac/Fine Paints of Europe and are very happy. It’s expensive but goes a long way and looks simply fantastic. More like a lacquer finish, with excellent leveling so you don’t see any brushstrokes. My painter found it demanding to work with but agreed the result was better than ordinary paints. Also, our doors are original and in pretty rough shape. Although we had them stripped by hand, the wood really wasn’t good enough to stain. Now we feel we’ve extended their life as well as improved their appearance. Btw, we used the satin finish but it’s still very shiny. I’m fine with that — looks like a London or Amsterdam front door — but not everyone likes that look. The brilliant finish looks like it’s permamently wet!

You can find something in a Ben Moore Oil Base that should suit you fine. If you want to go top shelf, Janovic has a Dutch paint which has a nice finish and great colors. I can’t remember the name but someone on here will pipe it in later. It is pricey though, about 100 for what amounts to less than a gallon. I am not sure every Janovic carries this; I bought mine at LIC. Steve

Use an oil paint, in a satin finish. Paint with the grain of the wood on the different sections of the door. Prime beofre and sand softly between coats. (Ben Moore has some very good paints for this.)

i think steve is referring to fine paints of europe. it is a high end paint and extremely durable. they are known for their high gloss but they also make a satin or matt. we will be using fine paints of europe once our front doors are restored.
