Do you need a permit to remove/cap a radiator?

Listen to Gennady. Also listen to advice about the system. Altering the radiator count will alter the the square foot of radiation connected to the steam system. In your case it does not seem like it would be immensely detrimental.

I’ve heard different things. One person said radiator/steam pipes don’t fall under plumbing which I don’t know is true.
I just want to remove and cap a radiator and swap a valve on another radiator.
Does either of these actions require a permit?

It would be part of a bigger renovation and if it goes on the permit than I need a licensed plumber to do it instead of a side job plumber who will cost half as much. And I don’t want to get a work without permit fine if I do it on the side and someone says it needs a permit.
(No offense to licensed plumbers, I know you guys have big overhead)

if i hear you correctly, you might be moving or removing a line, not just removing and capping a radiator. my guess is removing and capping the place where any fixture goes (if i were to remove a radiator in my house, i would make a case that ) does not require a licensed plumber. unlicensed folks are allowed to “change fixtures”. we are not allowed to move fixtures (meaning move the pipes in the wall, even two feet to the side).

in response to your comment about a side job plumber and overhead. part of that big over head with properly managed companies is the worker protections and the safety net for the employees. these are all things that were progressive reforms brought on with the workers right’s movements in the early 20th century and continued by FDR. this includes things like social security, sick days, holidays, and ideally health insurance. if we believe in hiring and paying people and providing those people with benefits based on their skill and believe that all people should have the benefits we have and if you support an end to struct ural racism in this country, you might want to consider hiring a company that takes care of its employees and that means hiring someone who charges more (it does not guarantee the employees are taken care of, but some pointed questions can help find out). to not make wise hiring decisions like this is to be part of a system that so many people are protesting against even as i write this. this is not who we are. we should all be concerned about vulnerable people and those who do not look like us.

This is the type of work that is best handled by a licensed plumber so it is done correctly and with no negative impact on the entire system. The fact that it does not require an Alt-1 or Alt-2 permit is beside the point. Furthermore, unless I am missing something, it is not a lengthy job so it’s not going to be extremely costly.

As of plumbers doing this type of work, it is not a plumbing, it is steamfitting.

Capping a steam pipe that supplies a radiator is a 15 minute job if the plumber is prepared with the right fitting. Also its just a bit longer I would say to change the valve out, depending on how old and rusted onto the pipe. If it doesn’t have to be cut away, it’s really quick. I have had valves changed out in every radiator in the house over the years. The effect on the rest of the system will be nothing, considering the amount of pressure in a residential steam heat system is very low. Increase of that pressure by the removal of a radiator would be negligible. And definitely no permit needed.

You should hire an architect to draw the building, a mechanical engineer to show the removal of the radiator as well, an expeditor to file and a licensed plumber to do the work and make sure he gets a DOB inspection and sign off.
