attaching window boxes to "press-stone"?

Hi – the house we moved in to has a “press stone” facade – this is a stucco like eye-sore, that we don’t have the money to replace just yet . . .  In the meantime I’d like to fulfill my life’s dream of having a window box!  Bye bye 5th floor coop, hello quaint house!!  Does anyone have any idea how to drill through press stone, to put in a bracket?  While I don’t intend to have this facade for longer than I hvae to, I don’t want to do something stupid like create a crack across the entire front, cause leaking in to the frame underneath, etc. While I’m at it I’d like to put some brackets for hanging plants up too, on the hideous press stone overhang by our front door.  So same question, for even lighter weight screws. And can you screw in to cement? or stucco?  or whatever it actually is? thanks in advance.  i’m starting from zero here so no answer is too obvious 😉

There are supports that I’m sure you can get from any gardening shop so that you can suspend the window boxes out of the window properly. Just make sure you’re packing boxes with soil BEFORE you hang them and get one that matches the size of your flower boxes properly so that the weight is properly suspended. You can probably screw the rail supports in from the inside of your home than to the exterior, but see what you can find first?

There are three ways: 1- put the windowbox on the inside. 2- drill in the wall underneath the window to install L-brackets. 3- drill on the sides of the window to install a metal bar to hold the window box tight. Whatever you choose, don’t drill holes in the windowsill; water will get in.  If you install your window box outside, rig it securely with a hook and chain to a screw eye securely fastened on the side of the window.
