Bas Relief wainscoting in Dining Room
Well Yes the pictures are Lincrusta sorry for the belated reply, just been flat out! I will look in the Historical books, but I have already seen many panels like this whilst flicking through the Books, I will try and have a look Tomorrow when I get back to the home office, If not it will be a week on Monday, when I reply as I am on Holiday from Saturday Morning this week. Those type of panels were in vogue around the late 1800’s up to around c1939. Please e mail me direct for a quicker response andy.sarson@cwvgroup.com

I went to an open house in Flatbush a few weeks ago and saw these amazing bas reliefs in the dining room wainscoting. This was in a circa 1905 1-family, 2-story limestone. Apparently they tell the story of the harvest. They go all the way around the room. Anybody seen these before?

There are many of these all throughout Crown Heights, Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Park South and further out. In the upper middle class development areas of the early 1900’s. And many still survive, as those houses where never chopped up and abused as much as those in the Downtown neighborhoods, they mostly stayed as owner occupied houses.

Where’s Montrose? I wonder if this is some form of lincrusta.

I thought it might be lincrusta also but all the lincrusta I’ve seen seems to be geometric patterns, and a bit less “3d” than these.

Very cool. I’ve never seen anything like it. (Unless you count tapestry inserted into similar wood paneling.) Do you know if the wallpaper is original to the house, or did the owner pick out something “period” later? Because that looks cool too (and possibly a little earlier, circa 1890s).

I’m not sure about the wallpaper. It didn’t look 110 years old. But maybe it was, just in pretty good condition. Here’s a shot of it, along with the ceiling decoration.

Here’s an ad from the Brooklyn Eagle for the houses. It says “Artistic decorations by Attwood.” Not sure what that means.
