Access to other apt in coop during reno?

Apologies if this has been covered before! The owners of the apt in the coop above ours want to reconfigure, and move their kitchen from the front of the building to the back, so shifting it to above where ours is (ours, and the kitchen in the apt below ours, were moved in the 60s I think). I think, then, that they’ll need access to our apt to extend the various lines in the wall. If their plans are approved by the board, do we have to give access? I don’t want to be an ass to them, I just want to make sure I know my rights, and know who should be insuring it etc. Thanks!

Make sure that you have homeowners insurance and the owners above you have insurance. Check to make sure they are using licensed contractors. Look up the licenses and check to make sure they have filed permits. Moving a gas line is complicated and a licensed plumber should do it. Take pictures of your walls and ceilings before they begin work.

This should all be covered in the proprietary lease for your shares. Remember, you don’t really own your unit, just the shares that represent the space you occupy. If the co-op board approves the change to the unit above, I don’t think you have a choice here. Similarly, for example, if the board authorizes repairs to a riser that passes through your unit, you just can’t say no. The board can move against you if you are non-cooperative. Get it, its a co-op?
