Williamsburg Basement Excavation / Radon / Moisture remediation

Peter- I haven’t started the project yet. I’ve been told by several contractors that I need a structural engineer to come in first and dig a test pit to see what work needs to be done. Everyone has told me that this sort of project is possible and this is done all the time. One excavator you can call to do the work is Ben – seven-one-eight-961-7215\. Let me know how it goes-

I own a first-floor condo that (allegedly) used to be a Civil War-era munitions foundry. During the conversion in 2008, the developers rediscovered this cellar below my main floor, roughly 12ft x 17ft, with an old brick floor and arched ceiling. It’s awesome, but right now it’s not really usable for much, even storage. While I’m interested in the possibilities of increasing the square footage down there (if that’s even possible) since it?s just a subset of my main floor area, or maybe lowering the floor, my main concern is doing something that can solve BOTH the moisture issues (never any water in 4 years, but requires a serious dehumidifier) AND handle the radon remediation. Any contractor I find seems to know how to do one but not the other, and sometimes suggest they are mutually exclusive. Angie’s list and google searches are basically coming up empty, so does anyone have advice in finding one contractor that can explain my options down there, and be able to handle everything from (possibly) an engineering assessment, to moisture, to radon remediation?

I don’t understand how waterproofing and radon remediation are mutually exclusive? Also, you realize this project will likely cost a fortune, right? I’m not trying to be nasty- digging down a cellar is extremely costly.

Most contractors would come take a look and talk things over and give you a quote. You want someone who knows what they’re doing to help you come up with a plan. John Buchbinder is a high-end contractor who does good work. His number is 718-599-7070\.
