Cellar Ceiling

Keep them covered for the above reasons. Also if yours is a multi family space partially above it, it would need to remain fire rated anyway.

Hey, trying to make my cellar usable as a workshop/studio.  The boiler room is walled off in fireproof-type bricks and has a metal ceiling – i’m not looking to mess with that.

My question is, can i leave the joists of the garden/basement floor exposed in the areas outside the boiler room?  Thanks

Some of mine are exposed here where I have my shop (where I ripped down drywall). It is not something I am comfortable with from a fire safety standpoint. I have multiple smoke detectors and have a complete heat detector system (which I have yet to install). At some point in the near furture I am going to run the wiring for later electric upgrades and close the ceiling with double 5/8″ rock and install a sprinkler system. If you do not yet think I am paranoid, I will tell you this: all flamable liquids are stored in an out building, yet I still worry about fire. If a fire ever started in a woodshop – with or without liquid excellerants – it would go through those old joists fast. Cover your joists with rock. Now that I am wiriting this, i am wondering if there is a spary on fire retardent or flame proofing that can be used (something similar to the kind used on theatre drapes). Steve
