What's difference between "multi-family" and Class A buildings?
Basic question – are “Class A” buildings the same thing as 2- or 3, etc., family buildings? If they are different, is it possible to change from Class A to multi-fam? How difficult is this process? Thanks.

I am not sure I answered the question you asked. I own a Class 1 building, a term used for tax purposes and includes 1, 2 or 3 family houses. As a 3 family I am classified as a multifamily for DoB and FDNY purposes. Not sure what Class A refers to….sorry for the confusion.

I believe that Class A refers to tax status. A Class building is 1,2 or 3 family. Multifamily refers to anything over 2 family and relates to things like building and fire codes. The two are not mutually exclusive — as you can see a 3 family can be Class A and multifamily. I live in one and get Class A tax bills but have to abide by the multifamily fire codes.
