self-certification

self certification and directive 14 are two different things. If you have been involved with more than a few self certs than you would have likely been party to an audit, which is no party. In my opinion the risks are too great with a self cert at all, if even one thing is found amiss in a random audit it allows for the revoke of permit process to be applied and its no fun. If the audit occurs at sign off, which it does more often in brooklyn and queens, its even less fun. I am currently involved in an audit of a non self cert non directive 14 project and thats the least fun so far.

We are planning on getting self-certification from an architect for some renovations.  (demolishing interior wall, building 3 bathrooms)  Has anybody gone through this recently and had any issues with self certification

None of my clients have had audits on architect signed-off Alt 2s thus far.  You will have plumbing and electrical inspections performed by the DOB and signed off by respective licensed trade professionals after passing inspection.  One architect I’m working with says Directive 14 (self-certification) may be going away altogether.  Visits from the DOB during construction have also become quite common, and they will immediately ask to see the stamped approved drawings, then perform a walkthrough looking for anything not being built per plan.  However your architect goes about it, as long as your are in compliance you will be fine.
