renovating bathroom -
i want to remodel my master bath that currently has a stand up shower and a bathtub. i want to enlarge the shower and remove the bathtub. this is in brooklyn. will this legally change my apartment deed? it is currently a 3 bed, 2 bath. will it go to a 3 bed, 1.5 bath without the tub?

Yeah, it would seem to me that we boomers age, instead of taking out the bathtub, the prudent renovator would elarge the shower, but also put in a smaller bathtub, the kind with a door where you can sit and bathe – especially if this is in a elevator building. After all, all these people decrying walk-ups, who can’t walk up a few flights of stairs anymore, soon won’t be able to lower themselves into a traditional bathtub, and will also be at great risk of slipping and falling in the shower.

no. a 1/2 bath has neither shower nor tub – – just a sink and toilet only. a bathroom with shower only qualifies for a “full bathroom”. Just not as attractive to a potential future buyer who has an emotional love with baths (or have kids). It should not affect the “deed” – but as always your building’s board may require approval of the work, esp since it involves plumbing.

A shower still constitutes a full bath. A .5 bath is when there is just a toilet and sink.
