Fire separations

The retail space below my apartment is under renovation, and the removed the ceiling to exposure the wood beams underneath. This has led to a very high level of noise in the apartment, among other things (smells from construction seeping up, plus power tools running throug hall hours of the night). There are two residential apartments upstairs, and the retail space below. Brownstone building… are they required to put in a ceiling under the fire code restrictions?

You can call 311 and report possibly unsafe work going on.  The drawback is that the owner (your LL?) might find out and be pretty pissed because an unexpected visit from the DOB Is never good.  I think that there is some sort of code about noise from work having to stop at a certain time in the evening, so maybe 311 can at least answer that for you.  I have a fully residential house and the things we did to meet fire codes here with recent work make me think that what they are doing is not to code and worth worrying about.   If they are violating something with the noise, you could just let them know and request that they stop and if it doesn’t get better, then report them.  Problems with a neighbor and construction are a tough situation to negotiate.
