I just got a summons for ECB hearing, a result of a DOB inspection of my sprinkler system related to how it was installed 75 years ago! The inspector said the Court will probably kick it out but the DOB prefers if the judge handle it. Do people need legal representation at these hearings?

I was just there for a dep fine last month. You don’t need a lawyer, but you should try to understand what they want and bring as much photos and evidence as possible

Whats your answer to the complaint? ECB are aholes and will treat you like you’re the problem. If you go and its gets hairy, just say you need the inspector present and it’ll get adjourned. But like said above, prepare to spend almost the whole day there. Remember, it’ll be lawyers for the DOB there actively working against you, so be prepared.

Hi, You just got a violation ticket with the summons date right? Maybe you should consult one of the architects/consultants who’s specialized in removing violations — you don’t need to pay a fine at all as long as the problem could be fixed/remedied and a certificate of correction being submitted to the DOB prior to the hearing date. I get my share of tickets. Call Jack Jaffa Associates at 718-855-6110\. They charge me $200 per ticket, and I believe give good value for money. ECB is little more than a shakedown.
