Hi, Marvin how long have you been living there? And yes as a child i would always see the outling / form of a little girl standing in the hall near the bathroom and she would flick the light switch on and off.. I was jus a little girl so I was terrified… There was also a couple really tall, in white cloting who danced , like a waltz and I would just watch them while in bed in the dark… This was all continuous for me.. and even voices and laughter…

This was my first home…. I spent the first 13 years of my life here. My family had been living there previously befor i came along. My family is still residing there today. I always had ghostly encounters here as a child and so did my family, so thats why i was looking into the history..

Yeah, Marvin lucked out, because his building’s landmarked. Otherwise, you can try searching the Brooklyn Eagle archives by entering in your address, within parentheses, in the advanced search function. You may at least find out anyone interesting who lived there, and sometimes, the architect. The other source is the Builder’s Guide, which is much harder to search, as buildings from the 19th century were not listed using address numbers, but rather, the distance in feet from the nearest cross street, ie – St. Marks, 450’e of Nostrand Ave. You may also have to just search through all the listings for your street. Hopefully, your street name is the same, too. This stuff isn’t always easy. What address are you looking for?

wow! that was an amazing response and amazingly fast! any advice on how to find this info if you are not in a landmarked area (right nest to one)?

Your building was built in 1916-17, as a flats building. The architect and builder was the G.B. Beaumont Company. Original owner was Emily M. Coler. The building replaced a group of private houses designed by George Chappell, who designed the group of houses across the street from you, and the Queen Anne semi-detached houses on the southern corner of Prospect Place and NY Ave, among others in the immediate vicinity. Your cornice was removed at some point, as were the original front door, and the windows. Your building used to be much fancier from the outside. You are fortunate to have a large yard, which would have been landscaped originally. Flats buildings like yours were designed to be for the middle class, and the apartments would have been nicely laid out, with nice detail, probably in the popular Colonial Revival style, which this building is technically classified as. Your building was landmarked this year, and most of this info comes from the designation report. You can read it here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/downloads/pdf/reports/2361.pdf
