Brownstone Demolition

A sold/purchased Brownstone, 5408 6th Ave in Sunset Park has recently had a crew gutting the building.  After seeing that the crew just put up a construction fence on the outside and asking the chinese crew what was going on they said the they were going to demolish the facade and create appts.  After looking up DOB records there are no permits for demolition.  This is also a house just accross the street from a brownstone demoltion that occured a couple of years ago, that was featued in Brownstoner.  This side of the street is not zoned for commercial development and has a consisitent look for the whole side of the street of turn of the century brownstones.  I think that there is something wrong going on here.  Is there anything that can be done?

Greenmt as a matter of fact when I did do renovations I did make sure that I hired a licensed contractor and that all work was done under the proper permits and to code. Armchair – yes I do think that sp needs to have height restrictions raised, there are too many people crowded into small houses but the overall development needs to consider what and where it is being built.  As for the current practices many of these “conversions” from 2 to 3 family are only a ruse to have more than 3 families live there. Many of these so called developers and landlords use these as a modern version of a rooming house but where tenants come and go in shifts.  No only have they destroyed the context but they have put strains on the infrastructure, general crowding and probably health.  Many of these houses not only have a garbage output the equivalent of a large apartment building but also a transient population that cares nothing for the bulding, the street, the other tenants or their neighbors.

the noisy people generally want “historic character” huge carbon foot print, but pretend to love the environment. and mostly gentrifying and thinking they are cool with the locals. also tend to be very nosy too.

sunset park needs to have its height limit raised. too many people too many small houses. it should warrant larger buildings.   but its always the nosies people that get what it wants.

This happened in my neighborhood. The contractor created a  box out a perfectly beautiful limestone and converted it to a 4 story condo.  He’s been trying to sell a unit now for 6 months.  Gee I wonder why not one wants one?  I give it another 3 months before they go rental.

Hey I’ve just been here all my life and have seen this neighborhood get destroyed by indifferent developers.  Perfectly good housing stock that lends not only character to a fairly distressed community but stability to a neighborhood.  This building could easily be converted from a two famiy to a three family without turning the street into the next Manhatten.  I only hope that there are more “nosy white people” and nosy black people and nosy everybody else so that the neighborhoods and communities can survive as these are what’s being sought by so many people who are moving to brooklyn.

I’m guessing the guy you spoke with didn’t mean that they were tearing down the whole building.  The application states that they are conerting the existing building from a 2-family to a 3\.  There’s no proposed change in floor area, so I would think that the existing building is remaining.  They’re just gutting it to convert to a three family.

That said, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on it.  If they start real demolition, report it immediately.
