repair of ceiling medallion?
Many thanks for all the advice and suggestions! Yes, the box is off-center, and he plastered over part of the ornate detail. We’ve been very clear from the start that we value and want to preserve the home’s original features, but he just doesn’t get it, unfortunately. (He keeps trying to convince us to remove the pressed-tin ceilings and install pot lights, and to carpet over the parquet floor!) We’re looking for another contractor to renovate the rest of the building after he finishes the work he’s doing on the rental unit. Recommendations welcome!

When the contractor updated the ancient wiring in our 1910 building in Ridgewood, Queens, he damaged a ceiling medallion, which I’m pretty sure is original to the house. I want to save it! Can anyone recommend a master plasterer who could repair it/would be willing to take this project on? Any idea how much something like this would cost? Photo attached. Thanks!

I don’t see damage. The medallion is in good shape, and he enlarged the hole to get a current code electrical box in there. He did a good job. Although it is unfortunately off center. Almost any electrical fixture will cover the hole. As Bob says, one with a canopy for covering a gas pipe will certainly do the trick. If, because the hold is off center, a piece still peeks out, I would think you could slap a little wire mesh with plaster on it up there and no one will ever notice.

I would cut out the whole center portion and replace it, leaving the outer ring of acanthus leaves. You should be able to find a suitable replacement piece in that diameter from MANY places online, either plaster or plastic. The plastic would be better as it is lighter and using a canopy like recommended above would holdit in place after you plastered the edges to meet the existing medallion. Yes, be did a poor job. There seems to be a lot of that quality workmanship around and it’s inexcusable. Is the box off-center? A bigger problem.
