Lead Paint Clarification
First off, for full disclosure I am an interior painting contractor. I’ve recently noticed some confusion over the issue of lead paint and how to deal with it in your home. First off, if your home was built prior to 1978, any contractor who is going to disturb more than 2 square feet in your home is now required to be an EPA certified “lead safe renovator.” Secondly, they should be testing for the presence of lead paint before disturbing said surfaces. This includes electricians, plumbers, painters, carpenters and any other contractor. If you know that you have lead paint in the home and are concerned, you more than likely don’t need a lead paint abatement company, only a certified renovator. Abatement companies remove lead, and cost a fortune. Certified renovators know how to work around lead safely. Don’t hesitate to ask about your contractor about their plan to deal with potential lead paint in your home. A little extra plastic and wet sanding is worth your health.
