Does anyone have experience with Lead Out paint stripper?
I’ve used Lead-Out Paint Stripper and Franmar’s paint stripper and they work great. I understand some people have had some frustrations with these strippers, but in my experience this is the best way to deal with lead paint – it keeps the dust to bare minimum which is the most important thing. Lead-Out also renders the paint waste non-hazardous so you are not polluting the environment when you throw out the paint waste. All chemical strippers have their sensitivities to temperature or humidity, but if you learn how to use them properly they are great tools. I use Lead-Out on any historic architecture I want to preserve and it works great every time. I think the coverage area on the website might be a little exaggerated. That might be why this person didn’t get great results. Put it on thick. I removed at least 5 coats of paint down to the bare wood off a porch once with one application of Lead Out.

Hi All, I am wondering if anyone has any experience with Lead Out paint stripper – which theoretically bonds to the lead particles (or something..) making the dust etc less hazardous. I havent found any reviews on here and am curious about how well it works as a stripper. thanks!

I’ve never used “Lead Out”, but I have dealt with many renovations where lead paint was present (I am a painting contractor and EPA lead safe certified for full disclosure). The most important thing to remember with lead paint dust is that you don’t want to create dust in the first place. Any time you sand, make sure you are spraying the surface with a mist of water. Keep the surface wet and there will be very little dust. A cheap spray bottle works well. If you are using stripper, make sure you have heavy 4 mil plastic down and put heavy paper over that. As soon as you get a pile of gooey mess, roll up the paper and put a new piece down. Don’t let it dry. After you strip the loose stuff off, keep it wet and sand if you need to. I use “rock miracle” paint stripper most of the time. It is nasty stuff and you need goggles, heavy gloves and coveralls but all stripping solutions are nasty so use the stuff that works. Good luck and make sure you keep the area you’re working in contained and then wipe it down really well when you’re finished.

I tried Leadout and found it to be absolutely worthless for removing lead paint. It worked fine for removing a couple of layers of latex paint that was over the old lead paint, but even with three successive applications, it seemed to do nothing to remove the lead-based paint from the brick surface I was working on. We ended up using Peel Away, and that worked fine. Neutralized it fine too with full-strength white vinegar left on 24 hours then hosed off.

I used it and it worked great. http://brownstonecyclone.com/2012/06/03/lead-out-how-to-safely-remove-lead-paint/ It took off at least 3 layers of colored paint, not sure if they were lead or not. It worked great on stripping our marble fireplace. At least 3 coats of paint came off like butter.
