Hi Fellow Home Owners, We have been resident in our Crown Heights brownstone now for a year, and loving it, but we’re still learning a lot about the process. Earlier in the year, we tore out a plaster ceiling in the basement; I tried to seal off the boiler, but some dust got to it. We’ve had a generally good relationship with our plumber, but his pricing methods aren’t exactly transparent, so we’re still wondering if we’re getting a good price or not. He came last night and dissembled a lot of boiler parts (FYI, it’s a gas boiler for steam radiators) and cleaned it all up, added some boiler glue to joins, and put it all back together again. Spent about four hours at the task. Boiler is working again fine now. Any thoughts on what is a fair price for that kind of work? Best regards, Rick

You’ve given no information on what was done and why. “Boiler glue” is not a product.

I’ve given no information on what was done and why? What about this:
> Earlier in the year, we tore out a plaster ceiling in the basement; I tried to seal off the boiler, but some dust got to it. He came last night and dissembled a lot of boiler parts (FYI, it’s a gas boiler for steam radiators) and cleaned it all up, added some boiler glue to joins, and put it all back together again.
I’m not a plumber, so I can’t tell you precisely what he did, but he took a lot of pieces apart, cleaned them, and put them back together again, because there was plaster dust. That’s what was done and why. As for the substance, he referred to it as a kind of high-heat glue. I only took a glance across the room, but it resembled that plumbing paste I’ve used for radiator valves, though it was in a gallon bucket or so, and he called it a glue. It was dark grey. How about for a “standard” boiler servicing? What’s a typical price range for that? I found this link that suggests $400-600 is the norm. Is that about right? http://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/heating-and-cooling/repair-a-boiler/

wow the guy spent 4 hours… in NYC that is worth $350/hr for a legitimate plumber..your bill should be around $1400…do you argue with your surgeon after he cures your cancer? in the midwest rates are lower so your link is totally inaccurate

Roughly $1mm per annum sounds correct. You all may not know this but the skills of a legitimate plumber are comparable to that of a Surgical oncologist.

Alright, Crownheights12\. I’ve got you now. I won’t comment on the price, but it does sound like he did a thorough cleaning. That “glue” was most likely furnace cement or refractory cement.

Thanks everyone. Honestly, I felt the price was fair, but I was double checking because you know who had her doubts. Yes, Master Plvmber, it was furnace cement, I see now that I’m home. Good night.
