Fire extinguisher inspection for boiler room

We were cited by FDNY because our fire extinguisher in boiler room is not inspected or tagged. Buro of Fire Prevention lists dozens of private companies that allegedly do this inspection. I smell major ripoff potential. Has anyone had their fire extinguisher inspected and tagged by reputable company for not a fortune? I went to Home Depot to try to buy a new one but they are sealed so you cannot see the inspection info and FDNY said if I’m buying a new one, it would have to be manufactured in 2011\. Tarzian also told me to hire an inspector. This is unbelievably complicated. We’ve passed inspex for 20 years and nobody ever demanded this before. (not to mention once the inspection is done, i have to have the document notarized and sent certified mail to FDNY… not undrestanding why they can’t just inspect the extinguisher when they come to see if we have one…)

seems silly – but legit.   Its been that way for me for about 5 years.  However – I’ve never had to get another company to come in.. i just called the FD inspector – he came and verified it, and then i did the certified mail thing. Just buy a new one from home depot.   If it wasn’t made in 2011 – return it.. They have to comply with local law too.  Get a 40-b:c or a 60-b:c and you should be fine.  should cost 40-70.00
