Question about Gas meter Oil/gas conversion
Hi, I am curious if anyone knows the answer to this. I am doing an oil to gas conversion, Coned said I needed new service from the street, so they are putting in a new line to then swing over and provide enough gas once the boiler is installed. My question is this, ConEd won’t put a new meter until the boiler passes all the inspections. So once my oil boiler is removed (which also provides hot water) and then the water heaters/gas boiler are installed, what meter do I get Gas from? Can I take over one of the apartments gas meters and use that? The boiler not running is not the biggest deal since we are almost out of heat season, but the hot water is, so I have to take the gas from somewhere. Curious how other people do it thanks

“you’ll have free gas until the meter goes in” Wow. Just wow. So illegal. Theft of service is what this is called and it’s a jail sentence if discovered. You’d probably get a lighter sentence if you robbed your local grocery with a handgun.

In Manhattan the whole process of oil to gas conversion takes between 1 and 2 years.

It’s no surprise anyone would try to do anything with ConEd illegally. I filed for my oil to gas conversion in Feb 2014, didn’t get the OK to put in my sleeve till July 2014 and now I’m still waiting for them to do the outside construction to bring new service. I’m afraid of what awaits me once I rip out the old boiler and install the new one

Your plumber must deal with it. No illegal connection can be done. All gas work must be filed , tested and inspected. Legally right course of action would be to file and legally install gas water heater and gas line sized for boiler, get water heater and gas line inspected, get gas card for water heater, then, after getting hot water heater done, do filing for new boiler, do oil to gas conversion, go trough inspections, get gas card then meter for boiler, and after that make post approval amendment to remove new water heater and alter gas line, then another inspection and sign off. Gas water heater load is 5 times less then heating load, so existing service usually is sufficient for additional load (water heater). Close both permits is a must. Also, Con ed would require testing of all gas lines in the house, or as alternative a gas bottle. Gas bottle charge is $5,000 and up. you might need to do it twice. And no rebates if new service is installed. But testing and replacement of existing gas lines will cost much more. Regarding connections on the load side of the meter. Any gas work must be filed and tested. So it must be filed as well. Also, the load on the meter must not exceed meter capacity. Con ed considers overloading of the meter as a stealing. And no one can turn off and on house gas valve except Con Ed.

i no longer do oil to gas conversions with con ed only dual fuel so that there is no loss of heat sine it can take forever to get new service

you cannot steal gas period.. any temps will be on the metered side and that may still cause problems

Oh, I just re-read, you are saying to temporarily jump off one of the existing meters, correct?

Ok, so what would be the proper way to provide hot water for the building if the new water heaters don’t have any gas until a meter is put in? What is the common scenario that everyone else does when there is an oil to gas conversion?

There is no way that anyone will jump out a meter after those 2 explosions… flat connections are straight out illegal..if you are dealing with con ed they are looking for a reason to shut your building down and you will have to replace every inch of gas work in the building. You will have to install a temporary hard piped connection on the load side (metered). Even then there is the risk of a shut off in the street if someone reports the smell of gas. If you get a blue card issued after the initial boiler inspection, you can get the swing over approved. No one passes a boiler inspection on the first try.It is critial that you get the boiler installed and inspected asap or you are looking at a nightmare

I see, is that legal or something that Coned just “overlooks”. I ask because now with this most recent explosion, I feel like everyone on Coned is on edge and don’t overlook anything like they might’ve in the past

your plumber should be able to answer your question. he will most likely jump it out. it’s a temporary connection on the meter bar that will give you gas through the new service pipe. you’ll have free gas until the meter goes in.
