who can install a gas range?
I’m replacing the gas range in the apartment I just bought (Brooklyn). Who in the world do I hire to do the installation? A…. what? I gather this is not a terribly complex task, but since it does create a big safety issue if someone is completely careless, I want it done right. Am buying the range from Lowes, and they contract out with the delivery company (3PD) to do installation. Am I crazy for wondering whether a delivery company is really qualified to do this, and would pay attention to getting it right? On the one hand they have liability issues to keep them in line, but on the other, it’s probably hard to notice if they don’t do it right. Super/building management is not helpful, alas. Thanks! (being new to home ownership SUCKS!)

Maryland may have a different code than NYC. Here a shut-off at/near the appliance is required. There should be slack in the connection hose to allow a person to pull out the range and shut off the gas.

Not sure about Brooklyn, but let me provide an experience from suburban Maryland. While delivery would be free from Lowe’s, installation would be approx. $150, and I had to pay $35 for them to come out and confirm what would be needed (credited to the installation price). When he looked at it, the guy said that he would have to charge me an additional $150-$200 to install a shut-off directly behind the stove (where it would do no good at all). Rather than pay $350 for an installation, I’m having it delivered and will install myself. since there’s no stove-specific shutoff, I’ll have to shut off the gas to the entire house, then relight my water heater pilot light when I’m done. I may go ahead and install the shutoff while I’m doing that. If I do, I’ll install it in the basement, below the unit, where I can actually get at it if there’s a stove fire.

Thanks, all. Coming to ownership with a well-below-average understanding of how all these things work definitely makes for a steep learning curve. I appreciate everyone taking the time to chime in here. I feel better hearing that this is a basic task, and that errors are easily detectable. I should say I wasn’t at all worried until interactions with Lowes and their delivery company (when they initially tried to deliver to me a damaged stove that had actually been crushed, with metal crushed out on both sides) gave me doubts about their competence to do ANYTHING right. At the same time, I had no idea whether paying an additional $175 at PC RIchards for installation (their fee; Lowes is free) would yield any better results.

I guess we’re ultra-DIYers, then, ’cause we buy appliances wholesale, pick up ourselves, and do our own installation. Way cheaper on all counts than going through a place like Lowe’s.

And for all your DIYers on here, even if you could do it yourself, there’s no reason to bother to when it is included in the delivery fee.

Not rocket science – the delivery people will be fine. They were when I bought mine, from another big box store. And yes, it is very easy to tell if they do it wrong (they won’t) – you’d smell gas. That’s a tell-tale smell, if you don’t have a senstive nose, someone you know must. Never smelled it from a new hose hooked up wrong. Just from defective valves inside old broken stoves, and, from old flexible tubes that have developed holes in them over time as they get old and stoves are moved around carelessly. Presumably, your stove won’t come with broken valves, as it is new, and you shouldn’t have a hole in a new flexible tube…and if you do, you’ll smell the gas.

The Lowe’s delivery person will be perfectly capable of doing this job. No need to hire a plumber. And, yes, though for many this is DIY, you don’t sound like you’re ready for that yet.

This is a simple DIY job. If you are not comfortable doing this (and from your description, you should not be doing it yourself), I’m sure the delivery people can handle it. A licensed plumber will cost you about $250 just to show up (plus the cost of the flexible connector). It’s 15 minutes work, but you’re paying for their travel time, supply truck, and their (unneeded in this case) skill and experience. Plus , if you already have a stove that you expect the delivery people to take away, you’d need the plumber there twice, once to disconnect the existing stove so it can be removed and then again to connect the new one.

Call your plumber. If you don’t have one yet, it’s a good time to get one.
